The MICF is supporting a project that will organize smallholder poultry farmers into groups for the production and supply of free range chicken. This chicken will be processed and marketed as a new brand. This will mark the first time that free range chicken will be sold in a retail setting in Malawi. Farmers will receive training and technical support in order to achieve the required quality standard for commercial sale. The company will also introduce an ICT platform that ensures real time flock monitoring, facilitating the monitoring of operational performance of farmers, financial viability and enabling management of disease outbreaks. The project will also construct a new abattoir and set up a cold chain and distribution network for the final product. Upon completion, 200 farmers will receive an annual increase in income of over $3,000 from the sales of free range chicken, and more than 100 new jobs will be created throughout the value chain.
